Update on Two Umpire Mechanics

As we adopt ISF mechanics, the following positioning will now be used for plate conferences in all Fast Pitch systems.

The base umpire(s) will position themselves across the plate facing the Plate Umpire, with their backs to the outfield. (see image - note that image shows two umpire system but will be applicable to all multiple umpire systems)

The base umpire(s) will be responsible for ensuring that no players are on the infield or warming up in foul territory in such a manner as to endanger the participants at the plate conference.Plate Umpire➢ After the Plate meeting, stand in a position just off the third base line in Foul Territory approximately one third of the way to third base. Base Umpire➢ After the plate meeting, stand in a position just off the first base line in Foul Territory approximately one third of the way to first base.

(Note: If multiple umpires they will assume between inning positions as shown on ISF mechanics manuals available in the Umpire Toolbox on the Softball Canada website -http://www.softball.ca/english/programs/canadian-championships/national-teams/umpiring/toolbox/umpire-toolbox.html )

If you have recently given a Level 1 or a Level 2 Clinic or are scheduled to give a Level 1 or a Level 2 Clinic in the future, you need to make note of the following manual changes:1) On page 74 of the current Level 1 Manual the photo of the umpire crew is now incorrect -shows the previous mechanic. 2) Bullet #1 on page 74 is incorrect and should read “Stand across from the PU and facing the PU with the coaches/captains facing each other across the sides of the plate.”3) Level 2 Fast Pitch Manual shows an incorrect photo on page 57

.Spread the word. It will take a while for this mechanic / procedure to filter down to the umpires.

Talk it up and give them a chance to work it into their normal routines.
